Sunderland FC Academy Scholarships

Football scholarships are currently a means of gaining entry into universities with a focus on athletics. If you are seeking one, then you have to read this entire article, as it is just for you! Apply for a scholarship at Sunderland FC Academy!

About The Academy

The club established the Academy of Light in 2003. It is one of the top football training facilities in Europe.

All of the club’s representative teams, including the Sunderland Ladies team and the U18, U23, and senior squads, are at the academy, starting with the smallest age groups.

The club received the highest possible degree of recognition under the new Elite Player Performance Plan regulations, known as Category One classification.

Players at the club have access to excellent facilities, including an indoor barn with a 4G synthetic field and up to 18 outdoor pitches, as well as a hydrotherapy pool and first-rate medical care.

The low-profile buildings give the impression of being more spacious inside than they actually are. This is because the lower floor is entirely below ground level!

It is a far cry from the Charlie Hurley Centre, the team’s former training facility. It consisted of makeshift structures like an abandoned cricket pavilion.

The Foundation Of Light Football Scholarship

With Sunderland’s Foundation of Light Scholarship, many young girls’ and boys’ dreams of playing football for Sunderland are realised while also providing an opportunity to earn certifications. Sunderland FC Academy

Since the beginning of their citywide cooperation in 2021, the Foundation of Light and Sunderland College have worked together to achieve great things.

Through the relationship, there are provisions for athletic development and career possibilities made available to hundreds of young student-athletes. This gives them the chance to reach their ambitions.

With some students representing their nations, moving up to higher-level clubs, and getting offers from prestigious colleges, the Football Scholarship initiative experienced success in national leagues and tournaments.

Having a comprehensive football and education programme, the Foundation of Light’s Football Scholarship offers gifted football players between the ages of 16 and 18 the chance to play for Sunderland AFC and earn nationally recognised credentials.

Aspiring young football players in the North East may now access a top-notch dual career pathway thanks to our exclusive cooperation with Sunderland College.

Students study a variety of topics at Bede Campus, our purpose-built sports facilities, and the Downhill Football Hub.

The Football Scholarship receives sponsorship from the top soft drink dispenser, ABCO-Anderson Beverage Company Limited. It is also administered in collaboration with Monkwearmouth Sixth Form Academy, South Tyneside College, Shildon AFC, Boldon School, and The Hermitage Academy.

Knowledgeable education officers and full-time, UEFA A and B-trained coaches will coach the students. They will train, play, and learn in the official Sunderland AFC Adidas training and match kits.

When To Receive A Scholarship

A player may receive an academy scholarship offer at any time on or after January 1st of the year they turn 14 years old. By December 31st of that year, the under-16 age group must have access to it.

A player has 28 days to reply to a scholarship offer if accepted. It is assumed that they have not accepted the offer if they do not reply within that time range.

Becoming a scholar has its own set of challenges, just like anything else related to football selection. During the season, players might have to cope with innuendos and rumours.

The Scholarship Course Programme

1. Play

In addition to competing at the highest level in the AOC Cat 1 League, students will represent Sunderland AFC against other club representative teams in the National Football Youth League and the EFL Community & Education Football Alliance. These competitions are limited to development teams from Premier League and Football League clubs. Therefore, the football experience is as close to Academy football as possible. Home games will be played at the Academy of Light, Downhill Football Hub, Bede Campus, or Beechfield Park (South Durham Campus).

2. Training

With full-time UEFA A and UEFA B qualified coaches, students will practice up to five days a week. They will focus on the FA 4 corner model of long-term player development.

The schedule and culture of coaching programmes intend to resemble those of athletes who attend professional academies.

Players will receive position-specific instruction in addition to individualised learning opportunities.

Goalkeeper coaches accredited by UEFA B oversee specialised goalkeeper training.

3. Academic Programme

With the option to pursue further education, the academic programme enables students to gain the fundamental knowledge, abilities, and credentials needed to advance into a career in sport and leisure.

The programme will cover a two-year duration and consist of a combination of theory and practical sessions, external exams, observed practical assessments, written reports, presentations, discussions, case studies, and workbooks.

Students will study a Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity Development (equivalent to three ‘A’ levels). They will also study FA Level 1 in football coaching, with the option to pursue FA Level 2 as well.

Why offer Scholarships?

A club might give a young player a scholarship for a variety of reasons. One is that the club may demonstrate its commitment to the athlete’s long-term future by granting a scholarship. Other academies might have an interest in the youngster.

A scholarship offer can also help retain the player with the team. Especially if they receive an international call-up and are more useful.

The young athlete possesses the qualities and mindset needed to persuade the team that they are a wise investment.

Lastly, the Sunderland FC Academy may try to safeguard their investment in a youngster they consider to be “special” by granting a scholarship if the player is actively expressing a desire to join a different team.

Sunderland FC Academy’s Philosophy

The Sunderland FC Academy will provide young athletes with the finest opportunity to grow academically and socially. Also, to grow on the pitch by being professional, approachable, and nice.

It is our duty to help young players grow in a demanding, secure, and encouraging atmosphere. Along with devoted and knowledgeable staff members.

Our goal is to establish a space where players feel free to try new things, make mistakes, and express themselves.

There is a structure in place that enables young players who are willing to put in a lot of effort. It also includes being adaptable, and remaining dedicated to the team to advance to the first squad.

As part of a comprehensive strategy that will result in young men and football players we can all be proud of, players will receive fair treatment as well as guidance and criticism.

Every young football player’s scholastic development is an important aspect of academy life, and we take education extremely seriously.

We genuinely think that every Academy player should pursue lifelong learning and holistic development.

Our goal statement is based on this and the belief that success is a process rather than a destination.

An Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) is necessary for full-time pupils. The apprenticeship consists of both an educational component and a Level 3 NVQ Diploma.

As part of their education, the majority of students will hence pursue a BTEC Level 3 in Sport. This is certainly the equal of two A-levels.

The scholars also receive a referee’s qualification and an endorsement from the Academy. This is whether they want to play professionally or not.
